Washing a Mobile Phone
Before Sunday of last week, I was the owner of a wonderful Sony Ericsson K750i phone. I would say it was the best phone I had ever owned – it was a great unit, perfectly sized, with a decent camera bundled in. Shame it wasn’t waterproof. It didn’t make it through the ‘E’ cycle of our washing machine over the weekend. I don’t have insurance for the phone, I’m on a contract with 3 months left and I don’t have a phone to carry me through to the end of the contract. Until my daughter found an old Sony Ericsson T68i of mine that is.
I’m starting to like going back to the ‘retro’ side of things. It’s even prompted me to go looking for a Sony Z7 on eBay (I owned a Z5 previously). Too many times in my life I’ve gone chasing after the latest and greatest gadget. I’ve had PDAs, Treos, Graphics Cards, Processors, and Camera Phones and I’ve spent far too much time and money trying to get a new toy. I use a phone for making the occasional call and receiving an SMS now and again. I think I could do without the camera, web browser, video camera, mp3 player etc built into one unit. I’m going back to basics and I’ll use a phone for what it was designed for. Making and receiving calls. That E61 will have to wait for now ![]()

Garth, your in need of help, I can tell by your latest post. Some retro things are cool, games, design, even the 70s lamp I have in my office is cool, but mobile phones?
The E61 is a beast of a phone, once you get over the scientific calculator styling that is. I just installed the Tom Tom v6 for the Symbian OS, handy for the Isle of Wight.

I’d steer clear of the Nokias that use Symbian until they’ve done a lot more work on stability. My N70 is a nice phone, but it keeps crashing in various interesting ways, one of which doesn’t have any visible effect. That one is the worst; you don’t realise anything is wrong until you attempt to use the phone, at which point it becomes clear that all is not well. So switch off, switch back on, and realise you missed several calls and have several texts waiting. I want my mobile phone OS to be a hell of a lot more reliable than that. My old retro Nokia looks big and clunky now, but at least it never crashed…

If you fancy a reliable phone then try the Sony Ericsson K608i. Sure, it’s only got a 1.3 megapixel camera but it is reliable in more ways than you think.
My K608i has passed the true test of any mobile phone, not once but twice, it has been dropped onto solid concrete at a height of around 6 feet. Both times it has survived, the display, camera and video still work fine, and just a tiny mark on one side.
There are several £4.99/month basement contracts for these phones so grab yourself a bargin!
